The plants are beautiful and all 13 were consistent in height and width. And at a fraction of the cost of other garden centers. Having the team that delivered them do the planting was one of the best values I can think of. They did a great job from start to finish and even helped me with my watering system which they didn’t have to do!

Aronia x prunifolia 'Viking'
Choose Viking Chokeberry for a naturalized shrub mass with spring flowers, black fruit, and red fall color. The tradeoff is suckering: it fills space well, but it is not the right fit for a tight, formal bed.
Buy This If
- You want a spreading shrub mass.
- You like fruit and fall color.
- You have room for suckers.
Skip This If
- You need a tight outline.
- You dislike removing suckers.
- You want evergreen screening.
PGNE Report Card
| Category | Grade | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Landscape Impact | B+ | It gives three useful seasons of interest without needing to be the main focal point. |
| Growth Rate | B | It establishes at a steady pace and gradually fills in by suckering. |
| Maintenance | C+ | Basic pruning is simple, but controlling unwanted suckers adds work in tighter beds. |
| Deer Resistance | B+ | Deer tend to leave this alone, though hungry deer may sample it where pressure is heavy. |
| Small Space Fit | C | Its spreading habit makes it a better fit for open beds than small foundation pockets. |
| Screening Value | B- | It can make a useful seasonal screen, but it drops leaves and is not dense year-round. |
Our Experience
At PGNE, we'd typically steer Viking Chokeberry toward open shrub borders, wet edges, and naturalized plantings rather than tight front walks or formal foundation beds.

Customers Usually Ask
Will it spread?
Yes, it can sucker, which is useful for massing but annoying in tight spaces.

They are very tart, so most homeowners value them more for wildlife and ornamental fruit.
Does it need a lot of pruning?
No, but remove stray suckers if you need to keep the planting contained.
