Why we stock one size

Most privet sold online is small — 18 to 24 inches, often bare root. It is cheap, and it takes three or four years to become anything you would call a hedge. Very large privet has the opposite problem: awkward to handle, expensive to move, and harder to establish.

Four to five feet is the size people actually want. It screens the season you plant it, one person can carry and set each plant without equipment, and a run of the same grade gives you an even hedge line instead of a patchy one. Stocking a single size is deliberate — every plant in your order matches the one next to it.

How many plants do you need?

California Privet is planted at 2.5 feet on centre for a solid clipped hedge.

25 feet 10 $621.00 $921.00
50 feet 20 $1,173.00 $1,773.00

For any other length, our hedge calculator works out spacing and quantity in about a minute.

Privet is semi-evergreen here, not evergreen. It holds much of its leaf through a mild winter and drops more after a hard one. If you need reliable year-round cover, arborvitae is the better choice and we stock that as well.

Common questions

Is privet evergreen?

Semi-evergreen here. California Privet holds much of its leaf through a mild winter and drops more after a hard one, particularly on exposed sites.

How fast does California Privet grow?

Fast — it is one of the quickest hedge plants you can buy, which is most of its appeal. Starting from a 4–5 ft plant, the job is usually shearing it to hold the shape you want rather than waiting for it to fill in.

How far apart should I plant a privet hedge?

2.5 feet on centre. Closer than that wastes plants; much wider and the hedge takes longer to close up. Measure your run in feet and divide by 2.5, or use the hedge calculator.

How tall will it get?

Left alone it reaches roughly 12.5 feet tall and 6 feet wide. Most customers keep it clipped somewhere between 5 and 8 feet, which is where it looks best as a formal hedge.

Will deer eat privet?

Deer generally leave it alone. Under heavy browsing pressure they may sample it, but it holds up better than most hedge plants.

Will it survive a New Hampshire winter?

Yes — it is hardy through zone 5a. Newton sits at the colder end of its range, which is exactly why we describe it as semi-evergreen rather than evergreen. Expect some leaf drop in a hard winter and a full flush back in spring.

How much maintenance is a privet hedge?

More than arborvitae. Privet earns its speed by growing hard, so plan on shearing it during the growing season to keep a tidy line. If you want a hedge you never prune, this is not the plant.
