Heuchera 'Northern Exposure Amber'
Choose Northern Exposure Amber Coral Bells for rounded, glowing amber-to-orange foliage on a dense mound that holds its color and its shape longer into the season than most heuchera; the tradeoff is that light-colored foliage scorches in hot afternoon sun, so this one wants morning sun or part shade rather than a full-sun bed.
Buy This If
You want warm amber foliage all season, not just flowers.
Your bed gets morning sun and afternoon shade.
You have had heuchera fail on you before.
Skip This If
The spot bakes in afternoon sun.
Your soil is heavy and holds water.
You want a plant with real flower impact.
PGNE Report Card
Category
Grade
Why
Landscape Impact
A-
Amber and orange tones are hard to find in shade foliage, and the color runs all season rather than for a few weeks.
Growth Rate
A-
Fast for a heuchera, forming a dense multi-crown mound quickly.
Maintenance
A-
Trim tattered foliage in early spring; water through hot spells and otherwise leave it alone.
Deer Resistance
B+
Deer tend to leave this alone, though hungry deer may sample it where pressure is heavy.
Disease Resistance
A
Bred from Heuchera richardsonii specifically for rust resistance — the disease that ruins most coral bells.
Winter Hardiness
A
This series was bred for northern cold. It is the heuchera group we trust most in New Hampshire.
Our Experience
At PGNE, the Northern Exposure series is the answer to the two things that kill coral bells here: winter heaving and heuchera rust. Terra Nova bred these from a hardy Saskatchewan species, and they hold up where the fancier heucheras sulk. On Amber specifically, watch the light — the pale, warm foliage colors are the ones that burn. Morning sun with afternoon shade gives the best color and the least scorch.

Customers Usually Ask
How much sun can it take?
Morning sun is good; hot afternoon sun scorches the amber foliage. The lighter-colored heucheras always want more shade than the dark ones.
Will it get rust like my last coral bells?
Much less likely. Rust resistance is the main reason this series exists.
Does it need dividing?
Not often. It is long-lived and holds its multi-crown form for years without splitting.

Showed up on time and planted it perfectly. I indicated a light we had to illuminate it and they placed it for optimal lighting. Worked fast and left a clean worksite. First rate!

They delivered three trees: a big linden, a big poplar and a little spice bush with install on the big trees. The install guys were great and professional and fast. All the trees looked good with minimal damage.

I went up there today from Quincy MA to pick up two Blue Wichita Junipers and they were absolutely beautiful. Thank you, Chris and everybody from Pro Growers of New England!

The plants are beautiful and all 13 were consistent in height and width. And at a fraction of the cost of other garden centers. Having the team that delivered them do the planting was one of the best values I can think of. They did a great job from start to finish and even helped me with my watering system which they didn’t have to do!
