The plants are beautiful and all 13 were consistent in height and width. And at a fraction of the cost of other garden centers. Having the team that delivered them do the planting was one of the best values I can think of. They did a great job from start to finish and even helped me with my watering system which they didn’t have to do!

Sciadopitys verticillata
Choose Japanese Umbrella Pine if you want a slow, formal evergreen specimen with unusual texture, not a fast screen. The tradeoff is patience and a protected site; heavy snow and ice can damage branches.

PGNE Report Card
| Category | Grade | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Landscape Impact | A- | Its dense outline and unusual needles make it a strong focal point without needing flowers. |
| Growth Rate | C | This is a slow plant, so buy it for long-term structure rather than quick results. |
| Maintenance | B- | Routine care is simple, but snow and ice damage can require cleanup or corrective pruning. |
| Deer Resistance | A- | Deer rarely bother this tree; it is a dependable choice where deer are a concern, though young trunks can still be rubbed. |
| Small Space Fit | B | Its slow pace helps in smaller landscapes, but it still needs room to develop naturally. |
| Screening Value | C | It has density, but the slow growth makes it a weak choice for timely privacy. |
Our Experience
At PGNE, we'd typically recommend this as a protected specimen near an entry, lawn edge, or garden bed where it will not be rushed into doing a screening job.

No, choose Norway Spruce if screening speed matters.
Does it need winter protection?
A sheltered spot is smart because heavy snow and ice can damage branches.
