Privacy trees for sale, from $40 a tree.
Arborvitae in stock in Newton, New Hampshire — start here and pick the right variety before you buy.
If you searched arborvitae for sale, you probably have a property line in mind and no strong opinion yet about which variety belongs on it. That is the right order to do this in. Arborvitae is not one plant — it is a handful of very different evergreens that happen to share a name, and the gap between them is enormous: one finishes at 12 ft and one at 30, one is genuinely deer resistant and the rest are not, and the price per tree runs from $40 to $199. We hold 12 varieties of arborvitae at our yard in Newton, New Hampshire, and deliver up to 75 miles — most of New Hampshire, northeastern Massachusetts and southern Maine. This page is the comparison first, the buy links second.

Which arborvitae do you actually want?
Five varieties do the privacy work. Mature size and spacing come from each plant's own record; the price is the cheapest size we currently have on the ground. Read down the Best for column first, then check the price.
About the deer column. Green Giant is the deer-resistant arborvitae — it is tagged deer resistant in our catalog and it is the one we point people to when browsing is the whole reason they are shopping. Emerald Green, American Pillar, Brandon and North Pole are not; deer eat all four, and in a hard winter they will strip the bottom four feet of a young Emerald Green hedge. But no plant is deer proof, Green Giant included. If deer are your main problem, read the deer page below before you spend money.
Now go to the right page
Each variety has its own page with every size, every price and the full spacing detail. Half the reason this page exists is to get you to the right one.
-
Emerald Green arborvitae — start here if price is the deciding factor. The deepest stock we carry, in four sizes.
-
Green Giant arborvitae — start here if you have deer, or if you need to screen something more than 15 ft tall.
-
American Pillar arborvitae — start here if the planting strip is narrow but the thing you are blocking is tall.
-
North Pole® arborvitae — start here if the hedge is in front of the house and winter colour matters.
-
Deer resistant privacy trees — start here if deer are the problem. It compares Green Giant against the junipers and spruces, which is a fairer fight than arborvitae against arborvitae.
Working out quantity or budget? The arborvitae hedge calculator does the spacing arithmetic for you, and privacy trees is the wider view if you are not committed to arborvitae at all.

How many arborvitae do you need?
A hedge is a straight run, so the arithmetic is plants = length ÷ spacing, rounded up, plus one — the plus one is the tree at the far end. A 60 ft line at 3 ft spacing is 60 ÷ 3 = 20, plus one, so 21 trees. Emerald Green and American Pillar space at 3 ft; Green Giant at 5 ft. The totals below have the volume discount already applied.
The other two spacings. North Pole is tagged at 3.5 ft and Brandon at 4 ft, so run the same formula with those numbers: 100 ft of North Pole is 100 ÷ 3.5 = 28.6, round up to 29, plus one, 30 trees; 100 ft of Brandon is 100 ÷ 4 = 25, plus one, 26 trees.
Installation is $30 a tree, with a $300 minimum, within 50 miles of Newton. On the 100 ft Emerald Green run above that is 35 × $30 = $1,050 on top of the trees. Most people planting the 3–4 ft and 4–5 ft skinny sizes handle it themselves; the heavier #10 sizes are usually worth having planted.
One decision the table does not make for you: a single straight row reads as a wall, and a staggered double row costs roughly twice as much but closes gaps far sooner and hides the fence behind it completely. If the run is short and the sightline matters, the double row is worth pricing.

Common questions about buying arborvitae
Which arborvitae is best for privacy?
For most New England properties, Emerald Green. It finishes at 12.5 ft and 4 ft wide, spaces at 3 ft, and at $40 a tree it is the cheapest way to cover a property line that needs thirty of them. Choose Green Giant instead if you have deer, or if the thing you are screening is taller than about 15 ft; choose American Pillar if you need Green Giant's height in Emerald Green's width. Best arborvitae for privacy is really a question about your site, not about the plant.
What is the cheapest arborvitae?
Emerald Green in the 14" AGFB 3–4 ft skinny size, $40 a tree, marked down from $50. The 4–5 ft skinny and the 5–6 ft skinny step up from there, so you can buy real height and still stay close to Green Giant's opening price. Buy ten or more and the volume discount takes it lower again.
Which arborvitae fills in the fastest?
Green Giant and American Pillar are both tagged fast growing; Emerald Green, Brandon and North Pole are moderate. But growth rate is only half of it. Buying a bigger tree buys you the same result immediately — a 5–6 ft Emerald Green gives you today what a 3–4 ft gives you in three or four years. If speed is the priority and the budget allows, size up rather than switching variety.
Which arborvitae do deer leave alone?
Green Giant. It is the one arborvitae in our catalog tagged deer resistant, and it is what we recommend when browsing is the actual problem. Emerald Green, American Pillar, Brandon and North Pole all get eaten. No plant is deer proof, though — a hungry herd in a hard February will taste anything, Green Giant included. If deer pressure on your road is severe, look at the deer resistant privacy trees page, where junipers and spruces are in the comparison too.
How far apart should arborvitae be planted?
Emerald Green and American Pillar at 3 ft on centre, North Pole at 3.5 ft, Brandon at 4 ft, Green Giant at 5 ft. Those are the spacings tagged on each plant, and they assume you want a solid hedge rather than a row of separate specimens. Arborvitae spacing is the number people most often get wrong in the expensive direction: planting Green Giant at 3 ft costs you 70 per cent more trees than you need and gives you a crowded row in ten years.
How tall do arborvitae get?
It depends entirely on which one. Emerald Green and North Pole finish around 12.5 ft, American Pillar and Brandon around 17.5 ft, and Green Giant around 30 ft with a 10 ft spread. That is the single biggest reason to decide the variety before you buy — a row of Green Giant planted where Emerald Green belonged becomes a problem about eight years in, and it is not a problem you can shear your way out of cheaply.
Emerald Green or Green Giant — which should I buy?
Emerald Green if you want a 12 ft hedge on a 3 ft spacing at the lowest price per tree and deer are not a serious problem where you live. Green Giant if you want a 30 ft screen, if the trees will be browsed, or if you want the fastest fill. The width is the part people underestimate: Green Giant wants 10 ft of mature spread, so it does not belong 3 ft off a driveway or a fence line, and Emerald Green does.
Can I plant arborvitae in the fall?
Yes — autumn is a normal planting season across New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Maine, and the ground here usually stays workable into November. We deliver and install right through the fall. Spring works just as well. The one stretch to avoid is midsummer in a drought year, when heat is working against a newly planted evergreen.
