If your last evergreen screen got stripped to five feet over the winter, you did not do anything wrong — you planted the wrong plant. Most arborvitae is not deer resistant. Emerald Green, American Pillar, North Pole and every other Thuja occidentalis is preferred winter browse, and on a property with real deer pressure an unprotected row of them will be eaten from the ground up. The two that work
Green Giant is an arborvitae, but not the same species as the ones deer eat — it is a hybrid, and deer largely pass it by. Upright junipers are a different family altogether: resinous, prickly, and genuinely unpalatable. Which one you want depends on how much room you have.

Choose Green Giant if you want a proper wall of green and you have ten feet of width to give it. Choose a juniper if the strip is narrow, the site is dry or windy, or the budget matters — a Skyrocket at $30 is a fifth of the price of a Green Giant.
No plant is deer proof. "Deer resistant" means deer avoid it when there is anything else to eat. In a hard winter with deep snow and a large herd, deer will browse things they normally ignore. What these two give you is a screen that survives a normal New England winter without being eaten back — not a guarantee. Anyone promising you deer-proof is selling you something.

Which arborvitae is deer resistant?
Green Giant, and effectively only Green Giant. It is a hybrid rather than a Thuja occidentalis, and deer largely leave it alone. Emerald Green, American Pillar, North Pole, Brandon, Techny and the rest of the occidentalis group are all browsed, some of them heavily.
Are Emerald Green arborvitae deer resistant?
No. They are one of the most reliably eaten evergreens in New England. If you have deer and you want that narrow formal look, Skyrocket or Taylor juniper gets you closer to it than any arborvitae will.
Are junipers deer resistant?
Yes, and they are the most dependable group for it. The foliage is resinous and prickly and deer avoid it even under pressure. Every juniper on this page is rated deer resistant.
What is the cheapest deer resistant privacy tree?

What is the fastest growing deer resistant privacy tree?
Green Giant, by a distance. It is one of the fastest evergreens available and it finishes at 30 ft. The trade-off is width — it wants 10 ft, so it is the wrong plant for a narrow strip.
Will deer eat a new hedge before it establishes?
Young plants are browsed harder than mature ones across every species, deer resistant or not, because the new growth is softer. The plants on this page are still the right choice — they are simply less attractive than the alternatives, not invisible.
How far apart do I plant them?
Green Giant at 5 ft. Junipers vary a lot — 2 ft for Skyrocket, 3 ft for Taylor and Spartan, 5 ft for Blue Point and Emerald Sentinel, 6 ft for Hillspire. Getting this wrong is the most common and most expensive mistake, so use the hedge calculator before you order.
