Miscanthus sinensis 'Zebrinus'
Choose Zebra Grass if you want a striped ornamental grass that reads from a distance. The tradeoff: it needs room and a spring cutback, and we would not use it where Massachusetts delivery or planting restrictions apply.
Buy This If
- You want striped grass foliage.
- You have room for a broad clump.
- You like late-season plumes.
Skip This If
- You need Massachusetts delivery.
- You dislike annual cutback.
- You need a true groundcover.
PGNE Report Card
| Category | Grade | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Landscape Impact | A | The yellow-banded foliage and late plumes give it clear presence without needing flowers nearby. |
| Growth Rate | B+ | It fills in at a steady ornamental-grass pace once established, but it is not an instant screen. |
| Maintenance | B- | Plan on cutting it back once a year and removing old stems before new growth pushes. |
| Deer Resistance | A- | Deer do not browse Miscanthus — the coarse, silica-edged blades are not worth eating. They will bed down in a mature clump from time to time, which flattens it until the spring cutback. |
| Small Space Fit | C- | The upright clump needs breathing room, so tight walkways and small foundation pockets are poor fits. |
| Screening Value | B | It can soften views during the growing season, but it is not a year-round privacy plant. |
Our Experience
At PGNE, we'd typically recommend Zebra Grass for open beds where the foliage pattern has room to be seen. If the space is tight, we'd steer you to Little Zebra Dwarf Maiden Grass instead.

Customers Usually Ask
Can it ship to Massachusetts?
No. Miscanthus grasses are no longer shipped to MA through PGNE.
Does it need cutting back?
Yes. Cut the old growth down before new spring growth starts.
Is it a groundcover?
No. Use it as a clumping accent or backdrop, not a spreading mat.
Why buy for fall color
- See the actual color before you buy it
- Foliage, berries and late bloom — all three seasons of interest
