The plants are beautiful and all 13 were consistent in height and width. And at a fraction of the cost of other garden centers. Having the team that delivered them do the planting was one of the best values I can think of. They did a great job from start to finish and even helped me with my watering system which they didn’t have to do!

PGNE Report Card
| Category | Grade | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Landscape Impact | B+ | The white flower spikes and fragrance carry well in summer, especially near patios, paths, or entries. |
| Growth Rate | B | It fills in at a steady pace but will not give instant mass the first season. |
| Maintenance | B+ | Pruning is usually light, mainly removing stray stems or shaping after bloom if needed. |
| Deer Resistance | B+ | Deer tend to leave this alone, though hungry deer may sample it where pressure is heavy. |
| Small Space Fit | B- | It can work in smaller beds if given breathing room, but it is not a tight little edging plant. |
| Screening Value | C+ | It adds summer bulk and foliage but drops leaves and should not be counted on for privacy. |
Our Experience
At PGNE, we'd typically recommend this for moist, partly shaded beds where customers want fragrance, native value, and pollinator activity without fussing over a formal shape.

Customers Usually Ask
Does it need wet soil?
No, but it does best with consistent moisture and struggles in dry spots.
Will it bloom in part shade?
Yes, though more sun usually means heavier flowering if moisture is available.
Is it good near a patio?
Yes, that is one of the better uses because the fragrance is noticeable up close.
Why Clethra (Summersweet) Belongs in Your Landscape

- Thrives Where Others Struggle - Tolerates wet soil, shade, and even coastal salt spray better than most ornamental shrubs
- Pollinator Favorite - Attracts bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds throughout its long bloom window
