Choose Sweet Woodruff for shaded beds where you want fast groundcover under shrubs or trees. The tradeoff is control: it spreads willingly, so use it where edging or naturalizing makes sense.
Buy This If
You need shade coverage.
You can let it spread.
Deer pressure is a concern.
Skip This If
You want a clumping perennial.
The bed dries out often.
You dislike spreading groundcovers.
PGNE Report Card
Category
Grade
Why
Landscape Impact
B
It gives shaded areas a finished, woodland look, but it is more about coverage than bold color.
Growth Rate
A-
It fills in quickly when the site suits it, which is useful but also means you should plan its boundaries.
Maintenance
B
It is not fussy once settled, but spreading edges may need occasional trimming.
Deer Resistance
A-
Deer usually pass this by, since the foliage deters browsing, though no plant is completely immune where pressure is severe.
Small Space Fit
C+
It can work in a small bed only if you are willing to manage its spread.
Screening Value
F
It is a groundcover, so it will not provide privacy or vertical screening.
Our Experience
At PGNE, we'd typically recommend Sweet Woodruff for shaded beds with room to knit together, not for narrow strips where every edge needs to stay sharp.

Customers Usually Ask
Will it take over?
It can spread steadily, so use it where coverage is welcome and edges can be managed.
Is it good under trees?
Yes, especially in shaded, organic soil that does not stay bone dry.
Do deer usually eat it?
It has good deer resistance, making it useful where browsing is a regular problem.
Why Choose Perennials for Your Garden?
Return Year After Year: Perennials come back each season, reducing replanting costs while increasing garden maturity
Extended Seasonal Interest: With proper selection, you can enjoy continuous blooms from spring through fall.
Low Long-Term Maintenance: Once established, many perennials require minimal upkeep and become more resilient over time.

I went up there today from Quincy MA to pick up two Blue Wichita Junipers and they were absolutely beautiful. Thank you, Chris and everybody from Pro Growers of New England!

The plants are beautiful and all 13 were consistent in height and width. And at a fraction of the cost of other garden centers. Having the team that delivered them do the planting was one of the best values I can think of. They did a great job from start to finish and even helped me with my watering system which they didn’t have to do!

Great prices and Unbelievable selection of big and small trees, shrubs, and flowering perennials! Nicest folks to work with. And local delivery is awesome! First time purchasing from this company, , and have already told friends, neighbors and family. The owner Chris is professional, knowledgeable, and yet laid back in a most friendly way. Mags in the office will help with any details. My all time BEST garden purchase EVER!
Bought 8-10 ft and all were barely 8 if you count the container. Trees are thin and lots of brown branches and broken branches due you thrown in box truck no wrapping or anything. Hoping they survive and thicken up quick…
