Ilex crenata 'Sky Pencil'
Choose Sky Pencil Japanese Holly when you need a very narrow evergreen upright for a tight spot; the tradeoff is that it gives structure, not a dense privacy screen, and it prefers a protected site.
Buy This If

You can keep watering consistent.
Skip This If

You dislike narrow columnar plants.

PGNE Report Card
Category
Grade
Why
Landscape Impact
B+
Its narrow upright shape makes a clear design point, but it can look awkward if used alone in a broad empty bed.
Growth Rate
C+
It is not the shrub to buy when you need quick size or fast screening.
Maintenance
B
It usually needs only light shaping, but heavy snow can splay the tight column, so tie or brush it off.
Deer Resistance
C-
Japanese holly is browsed by deer, especially in winter, so it is not a plant to rely on where deer pressure is regular.
Small Space Fit
A
This is where Sky Pencil earns its keep because it gives vertical structure where wider shrubs do not fit.
Screening Value
C
It can mark a space or soften a view, but it is too narrow to serve as a serious privacy screen.
Our Experience
At PGNE, we'd typically recommend Sky Pencil Japanese Holly in pairs or small groups where the narrow form looks intentional, not like a leftover plant squeezed into a gap. It is best in a protected spot in our colder zones.

Customers Usually Ask
Can I use it for privacy?
Only for light separation; choose a fuller holly if privacy is the goal.
Does it need pruning?
Only light cleanup is usually needed to keep the column neat.
Is it good by a front door?
Yes, if the spot is protected and the narrow shape fits the scale.
Bright Winter Berries: Female varieties produce striking red berries that add visual interest and attract wildlife.
Ideal for Privacy & Screening: Dense growth makes holly an excellent option for natural hedges and property boundaries.
Shrubs Grown to Perform in New England
At Pro Growers of New England, our shrubs are grown and maintained locally to perform in true New England conditions. From flowering varieties to evergreen foundation plants, each shrub is properly spaced, pruned, and cared for to develop strong root systems and balanced structure before it ever reaches your landscape.
Unlike large online sellers that ship plants long distances, we invite you to visit our nursery, walk the rows, and inspect the exact shrubs available. You can see the size, health, and fullness in person — ensuring there are no surprises upon delivery.
We use your zone to recommend plants that survive your winters, and to estimate when your
order ships — we ship each plant when the weather where you live is right for it.

Bought 8-10 ft and all were barely 8 if you count the container. Trees are thin and lots of brown branches and broken branches due you thrown in box truck no wrapping or anything. Hoping they survive and thicken up quick…
I went up there today from Quincy MA to pick up two Blue Wichita Junipers and they were absolutely beautiful. Thank you, Chris and everybody from Pro Growers of New England!

The plants are beautiful and all 13 were consistent in height and width. And at a fraction of the cost of other garden centers. Having the team that delivered them do the planting was one of the best values I can think of. They did a great job from start to finish and even helped me with my watering system which they didn’t have to do!

Great prices and Unbelievable selection of big and small trees, shrubs, and flowering perennials! Nicest folks to work with. And local delivery is awesome! First time purchasing from this company, , and have already told friends, neighbors and family. The owner Chris is professional, knowledgeable, and yet laid back in a most friendly way. Mags in the office will help with any details. My all time BEST garden purchase EVER!
