Buddleia 'SMNBDL'
Choose Pugster® Amethyst if you want big butterfly-bush flowers in a compact spot; the tradeoff is that it behaves more like a cutback perennial than a woody backbone shrub.
Buy This If
You want compact pollinator color.
You can prune hard in spring.
Deer browse is a concern.
Skip This If
You need winter structure.
Your site stays soggy.
You dislike seasonal dieback.
PGNE Report Card
Category
Grade
Why
Landscape Impact
A-
The flower heads carry well in a small bed, but the plant does not contribute much during winter.
Growth Rate
B+
It pushes new growth quickly after spring pruning and flowers on that fresh growth.
Maintenance
B
Plan on a hard spring cutback and occasional cleanup rather than shearing it like a hedge.
Deer Resistance
A-
Deer usually pass this by, since the foliage deters browsing, though no plant is completely immune where pressure is severe.
Small Space Fit
A
Its compact habit makes it easier to place near walks, patios, and smaller foundation beds.
Screening Value
D
It is not the plant to use when you need privacy, mass, or winter coverage.
Our Experience
At PGNE, we'd typically recommend treating this as a spring-cutback shrub: give it a warm, bright spot, avoid wet soil, and let the new growth carry the season's flowers.

Customers Usually Ask
Does it attract butterflies?
Yes, that is one of the main reasons to plant it.
Should I cut it back?
Yes, cut it back in spring because it blooms on new wood.
Is it good for privacy?
No, use it for flowers and pollinators, not screening.

Drought tolerant, deer resistant, full sun
Locally grown for New England conditions
Every plant in our Fall Sale is grown or hardened off right here in New Hampshire, so it's already acclimated to New England winters before it ever leaves our nursery.
We use your zone to recommend plants that survive your winters, and to estimate when your
order ships — we ship each plant when the weather where you live is right for it.

I went up there today from Quincy MA to pick up two Blue Wichita Junipers and they were absolutely beautiful. Thank you, Chris and everybody from Pro Growers of New England!

The plants are beautiful and all 13 were consistent in height and width. And at a fraction of the cost of other garden centers. Having the team that delivered them do the planting was one of the best values I can think of. They did a great job from start to finish and even helped me with my watering system which they didn’t have to do!

Great prices and Unbelievable selection of big and small trees, shrubs, and flowering perennials! Nicest folks to work with. And local delivery is awesome! First time purchasing from this company, , and have already told friends, neighbors and family. The owner Chris is professional, knowledgeable, and yet laid back in a most friendly way. Mags in the office will help with any details. My all time BEST garden purchase EVER!
Bought 8-10 ft and all were barely 8 if you count the container. Trees are thin and lots of brown branches and broken branches due you thrown in box truck no wrapping or anything. Hoping they survive and thicken up quick…
