Rhododendron 'P.J.M.'
Choose PJM Rhododendron if you want compact evergreen structure with reliable purple spring color in a New England foundation bed; the tradeoff is soil: it needs acidic, well-drained, organic soil and struggles in wet or limey spots.
Buy This If
You can provide acidic, well-drained soil.
You want early purple spring flowers.
You need a compact evergreen shrub.
Skip This If
Your soil stays soggy after rain.

PGNE Report Card
Category
Grade
Why
Landscape Impact
B+
The spring bloom gives strong early color, while the evergreen foliage keeps the planting structured after flowering.
Growth Rate
B
It grows at a steady pace that is easy to manage, but it will not create instant cover.
Maintenance
B
It needs acidic soil and proper mulching, but pruning is usually light when the site is right.
Deer Resistance
D
Deer may browse PJM Rhododendron, especially in winter or along regular feeding routes.
Small Space Fit
A-
Its compact upright habit fits foundation beds and entries, though it still needs room for airflow.
Screening Value
C
It works better as low evergreen structure in a mixed bed than as a privacy screen by itself.
Our Experience
At PGNE, we'd typically recommend PJM where soil prep is realistic, not as a fix for wet clay. Use an acidic planting mix, mulch lightly, and keep mulch off the stems.

Customers Usually Ask
Will it stay green in winter?
Yes, but cold weather can bronze or curl the leaves.
Does it need pruning?
Usually very little; shape lightly after spring bloom if needed.
Can I plant it in clay?
Only if drainage and acidity are corrected first.

Bought 8-10 ft and all were barely 8 if you count the container. Trees are thin and lots of brown branches and broken branches due you thrown in box truck no wrapping or anything. Hoping they survive and thicken up quick…
I went up there today from Quincy MA to pick up two Blue Wichita Junipers and they were absolutely beautiful. Thank you, Chris and everybody from Pro Growers of New England!

The plants are beautiful and all 13 were consistent in height and width. And at a fraction of the cost of other garden centers. Having the team that delivered them do the planting was one of the best values I can think of. They did a great job from start to finish and even helped me with my watering system which they didn’t have to do!

Great prices and Unbelievable selection of big and small trees, shrubs, and flowering perennials! Nicest folks to work with. And local delivery is awesome! First time purchasing from this company, , and have already told friends, neighbors and family. The owner Chris is professional, knowledgeable, and yet laid back in a most friendly way. Mags in the office will help with any details. My all time BEST garden purchase EVER!
