At PGNE, we'd typically recommend this for shaded spots where the plant will be seen close up, not buried behind larger shrubs or expected to cover a wide area fast. It is our best-selling fern and we sell out of it regularly — but it is an ornamental choice, so if the job calls for native or wetland plants we would move you to Cinnamon, Sensitive, or American Royal Fern.

No, it is a clumping fern, so it stays much easier to manage than running types.

Is this a native fern?

No. It is native to Japan and eastern Asia and is sold as an ornamental. For native plantings we would point you to Christmas, Lady, Cinnamon, or Ostrich Fern.

Can it handle dry shade?

Not well; give it steady moisture or choose a tougher fern.

Does the color stay visible in shade?

Yes, the silver-gray tones are the main reason to choose it for darker beds.
