Ajuga reptans 'Chocolate Chip'
Choose Chocolate Chip Bugleweed for a tight, dark-leaved groundcover in shaded beds where you want living mulch and spring blue flowers. The tradeoff: it spreads, so use it where edging or neighboring plants can contain it.
Buy This If
You want a low dark groundcover.
Your bed has some moisture.
You can edge spreading runners.
Skip This If
You need a plant that stays put.
The area dries out often.
You want height or screening.
PGNE Report Card
Category
Grade
Why
Landscape Impact
B
The dark, small foliage and spring flowers read best up close, not from across the yard.
Growth Rate
B
It fills in at a steady pace once rooted, but it is not an instant carpet.
Maintenance
B
Routine edging and occasional cleanup keep it tidy because the runners will wander.
Deer Resistance
A-
Deer usually pass this by, since the foliage deters browsing, though no plant is completely immune where pressure is severe.
Small Space Fit
A-
Its compact habit works well in tight shade pockets if the edges are defined.
Screening Value
F
This is a groundcover and will not block views or hide utilities.
Our Experience
At PGNE, we'd typically recommend this for small shaded pockets, not large open sweeps. Give it a defined edge, keep it watered while rooting in, and expect some seasonal cleanup after winter.

Customers Usually Ask
Will it take over?
It spreads by runners, so plan to edge it before it moves where you do not want it.
Does it stay evergreen?
It may hold foliage in mild winters, but New England weather can leave it needing spring cleanup.
Can it grow under trees?
Yes, if the soil is not bone-dry from root competition.

Bought 8-10 ft and all were barely 8 if you count the container. Trees are thin and lots of brown branches and broken branches due you thrown in box truck no wrapping or anything. Hoping they survive and thicken up quick…

The plants are beautiful and all 13 were consistent in height and width. And at a fraction of the cost of other garden centers. Having the team that delivered them do the planting was one of the best values I can think of. They did a great job from start to finish and even helped me with my watering system which they didn’t have to do!
