Cornus florida 'Cherokee Brave'
Choose Cherokee Brave Dogwood if you want a red-flowering dogwood as a front-yard focal tree. The tradeoff: it is not a privacy tree, and it needs good siting, watering during establishment, and air flow.
| Category | Grade | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Landscape Impact | A- | The red spring bracts and layered branching give it strong focal value without overwhelming a yard. |
| Growth Rate | B | It grows at a steady pace, but it is not the tree to pick for fast results. |
| Maintenance | B- | It is manageable, but good watering, mulch, and air movement matter more than with tougher ornamental trees. |
| Deer Resistance | C | Young trees like this can be browsed or rubbed by deer, so protect it while it establishes where pressure is heavy. |
| Small Space Fit | B | It fits many smaller landscapes if it is not crowded against walks, walls, or the house. |
| Screening Value | D | This is an ornamental flowering tree, not a plant for blocking views. |
At PGNE, we'd typically recommend this where the tree can stand on its own visually, not squeezed into a narrow bed or expected to screen a neighbor.
| Mature Height | 22.5 ft |
|---|---|
| Mature Width | 22.5 ft |
| Hardiness Zones | 5a-9b |
| Spacing | 22.5 ft |
| Sun | Full Sun to Part Sun |
| Moisture | Dry to average |
| Growth Habit | Upright, spreading, layered |
Yes, if you have room for its spreading shape and do not need shade or privacy.
It can handle sun or part sun, but avoid hot, dry, reflected-heat spots.
It has improved resistance compared with standard dogwoods, but good siting still matters.

I had a great experience with Pro Growers of New England. When I was looking to purchase a couple of trees for my yard, I came across them while searching for places nearby. Buying plants online can be a little intimidating because there are so many variables, but they were only about 10 minutes away, so I decided to stop by.
All of the plants were really well cared for, they had a great irrigation setup to keep everything watered, and the selection was enormous. I ended up placing an order online, and they picked out a couple of beautiful trees for me. I had a last-minute change in the tree I wanted, and when I called they were very accommodating.
The staff was friendly and helpful throughout the whole process. They helped me find everything I needed, answered my questions, and made the entire experience easy. I also had one tricky planting location with a big rock and a tough invasive vine, but they made it work and planted everything perfectly.
I wasn’t sure at first if I should have the trees professionally installed, but I’m so glad I did. They did an excellent job, and the whole experience was easy from start to finish. Thanks so much for the beautiful plants and the great service!

Showed up on time and planted it perfectly. I indicated a light we had to illuminate it and they placed it for optimal lighting. Worked fast and left a clean worksite. First rate!
Really great website, communication and installation. Very happy customer and would recommend them.
They delivered three trees: a big linden, a big poplar and a little spice bush with install on the big trees. The install guys were great and professional and fast. All the trees looked good with minimal damage.
I went up there today from Quincy MA to pick up two Blue Wichita Junipers and they were absolutely beautiful. Thank you, Chris and everybody from Pro Growers of New England!
The plants are beautiful and all 13 were consistent in height and width. And at a fraction of the cost of other garden centers. Having the team that delivered them do the planting was one of the best values I can think of. They did a great job from start to finish and even helped me with my watering system which they didn’t have to do!
They're very "leggy" right now but that's not unexpected in the fall. Otherwise, they look healthy, and we're looking forward to seeing them next year.
These look so good! They're nice and full and lush. Should be amazing next summer.
So far so good! Ordering was easy. So was pickup. We're looking forward to seeing how it does in the spring.
