Ligustrum ovalifolium
Choose California Privet if you want a dense, fast green hedge that you can shear into a clean formal line in a few seasons. The tradeoff: it is semi-evergreen in New England, so expect it to thin or drop leaf after a hard winter, and it needs shearing two or three times a year to stay tight. We sell one grade, 4–5 ft, so every plant in your run starts the same height.

At PGNE, we'd recommend California Privet for homeowners who want a fast, formal hedge and are happy to shear it. Plant it 2.5 ft on center in full sun to part shade, and give it a good soaking through its first season. If you need dense evergreen cover all winter, look at arborvitae instead.

Semi-evergreen. In milder winters it holds much of its leaf; after a hard New England winter it can drop leaf and look thin until it greens up in spring.
2.5 ft on center. For a 50 ft run that is 21 plants, counting one at each end.
Fast. Starting from a 4–5 ft plant, it fills in and gains height quickly, which is why it needs regular shearing.
Deer tend to leave it alone, though no plant is completely browse-proof where deer pressure is heavy.
