Dryopteris erythrosora 'Brilliance'
Choose Brilliance Autumn Fern for a tidy shade accent with copper new growth; the tradeoff is it will not cover ground fast or give winter structure. It is best for close-up beds where color and texture matter.

PGNE Report Card
Category
Grade
Why
Landscape Impact
B+
The copper new growth gives shaded beds noticeable color without looking too busy.
Growth Rate
B
It fills in at a useful pace, but it is not the fern for covering a large area quickly.
Maintenance
A-
Keep soil from drying out and cut back tired fronds as needed, but it stays manageable.
Deer Resistance
A-
Deer rarely browse ferns, making this one of the more dependable choices where deer pressure is heavy.
Small Space Fit
A
Its clumping habit makes it easy to place near paths, entries, and mixed shade borders.
Screening Value
F
This is a texture plant, not a screen or privacy plant.
Our Experience
At PGNE, we'd typically recommend this for shaded beds you see up close, not back corners. Give it decent soil moisture and pair it with broader-leaved perennials so the fine fern texture stands out. If the job calls for native or wetland plants, this is not the fern for it — see our Cinnamon, Sensitive, or American Royal Fern.

Customers Usually Ask
Does the copper color last all season?
No. The new fronds open coppery, then mature to green.
Is this a native fern?
No. Autumn Fern is native to Japan and is sold as an ornamental. For native plantings we would point you to Christmas, Lady, Cinnamon, or Ostrich Fern.
Will it spread all over?
No. It grows as a clump, so it is easier to manage than running ferns.
Can it handle dry shade?
Not well. It performs better where the soil stays evenly moist.
Why Add Ferns to Your Landscape?
Perfect for Shade Gardens: Ferns thrive in partial to full shade, making them ideal for woodland and foundation plantings.
We use your zone to recommend plants that survive your winters, and to estimate when your
order ships — we ship each plant when the weather where you live is right for it.

Bought 8-10 ft and all were barely 8 if you count the container. Trees are thin and lots of brown branches and broken branches due you thrown in box truck no wrapping or anything. Hoping they survive and thicken up quick…
I went up there today from Quincy MA to pick up two Blue Wichita Junipers and they were absolutely beautiful. Thank you, Chris and everybody from Pro Growers of New England!

The plants are beautiful and all 13 were consistent in height and width. And at a fraction of the cost of other garden centers. Having the team that delivered them do the planting was one of the best values I can think of. They did a great job from start to finish and even helped me with my watering system which they didn’t have to do!

Great prices and Unbelievable selection of big and small trees, shrubs, and flowering perennials! Nicest folks to work with. And local delivery is awesome! First time purchasing from this company, , and have already told friends, neighbors and family. The owner Chris is professional, knowledgeable, and yet laid back in a most friendly way. Mags in the office will help with any details. My all time BEST garden purchase EVER!
