Perovskia atriplicifolia 'Blue Jean Baby'
Choose Blue Jean Baby Russian Sage if you want compact, drought-tolerant blue color in a hot sunny bed; the tradeoff is it needs sharp drainage and looks rough if crowded or overwatered.
Buy This If

You like fragrant gray foliage.
Your soil dries between watering.
Skip This If

PGNE Report Card
Category
Grade
Why
Landscape Impact
A-
The smoky blue flowers and gray foliage give a strong summer-to-fall presence without taking over the whole bed.
Growth Rate
A
It fills in quickly for a perennial, so give it room rather than tucking it into a tight gap.
Maintenance
B
It is not fussy once established, but it needs cleanup and should not be watered like a thirsty perennial.
Deer Resistance
A-
Deer usually pass this by, since the foliage deters browsing, though no plant is completely immune where pressure is severe.
Small Space Fit
B+
The compact habit works in smaller sunny beds, but the airy stems still need elbow room.
Screening Value
D
It can soften a view in summer, but it is not a privacy or boundary plant.
Our Experience
At PGNE, we'd typically recommend this for sunny, leaner beds where the owner wants color after spring perennials fade. Avoid rich, wet spots; that is where Russian sage usually disappoints.

Customers Usually Ask
Does it need a lot of water?
No. After establishment, keep it on the dry-to-average side; constant moisture works against it.
Will deer eat it?
It has good deer resistance because of aromatic foliage, but no plant is guaranteed.
Should I cut it back?
Yes, cut back old stems in spring once new growth starts.

I went up there today from Quincy MA to pick up two Blue Wichita Junipers and they were absolutely beautiful. Thank you, Chris and everybody from Pro Growers of New England!

The plants are beautiful and all 13 were consistent in height and width. And at a fraction of the cost of other garden centers. Having the team that delivered them do the planting was one of the best values I can think of. They did a great job from start to finish and even helped me with my watering system which they didn’t have to do!

Great prices and Unbelievable selection of big and small trees, shrubs, and flowering perennials! Nicest folks to work with. And local delivery is awesome! First time purchasing from this company, , and have already told friends, neighbors and family. The owner Chris is professional, knowledgeable, and yet laid back in a most friendly way. Mags in the office will help with any details. My all time BEST garden purchase EVER!
Bought 8-10 ft and all were barely 8 if you count the container. Trees are thin and lots of brown branches and broken branches due you thrown in box truck no wrapping or anything. Hoping they survive and thicken up quick…
