Dicentra spectibilis
Choose Bleeding Hearts for a shaded spring bed where you want early flowers with a soft, old-garden feel. The tradeoff: it usually fades back in summer, so pair it with later foliage plants.
Buy This If
You want spring flowers in shade.
You like a cottage-garden look.
Summer dormancy will not bother you.
Skip This If
You need summer-long flowers.
The bed gets hot afternoon sun.
Deer browse that area heavily.
PGNE Report Card
Category
Grade
Why
Landscape Impact
B+
It gives strong spring character, but the display is early and then recedes.
Growth Rate
B
It fills in at a useful pace without acting like a groundcover.
Maintenance
B-
It is simple in the right shade, but you need to plan around summer dormancy.
Deer Resistance
A-
Deer usually pass this by, since the foliage deters browsing, though no plant is completely immune where pressure is severe.
Small Space Fit
B+
Its clumping habit works well in tighter beds if nearby plants cover the gap later.
Screening Value
F
It is a perennial accent, not a plant for privacy or blocking views.
Our Experience
At PGNE, we'd typically recommend Bleeding Hearts as a spring layer, not the only plant in the bed. Pair it with hosta, brunnera, or astilbe so the area still looks filled after it rests.

Customers Usually Ask
Does it disappear in summer?
Often, yes, especially in heat; that is normal, not a failure.
Can it take sun?
Morning sun is usually fine, but hot afternoon sun is not the right site.
What should I plant with it?
Use hosta, brunnera, astilbe, or foamflower to cover the space later.
Why Choose Perennials for Your Garden?
Return Year After Year: Perennials come back each season, reducing replanting costs while increasing garden maturity
Extended Seasonal Interest: With proper selection, you can enjoy continuous blooms from spring through fall.
Low Long-Term Maintenance: Once established, many perennials require minimal upkeep and become more resilient over time.

I went up there today from Quincy MA to pick up two Blue Wichita Junipers and they were absolutely beautiful. Thank you, Chris and everybody from Pro Growers of New England!

The plants are beautiful and all 13 were consistent in height and width. And at a fraction of the cost of other garden centers. Having the team that delivered them do the planting was one of the best values I can think of. They did a great job from start to finish and even helped me with my watering system which they didn’t have to do!

Great prices and Unbelievable selection of big and small trees, shrubs, and flowering perennials! Nicest folks to work with. And local delivery is awesome! First time purchasing from this company, , and have already told friends, neighbors and family. The owner Chris is professional, knowledgeable, and yet laid back in a most friendly way. Mags in the office will help with any details. My all time BEST garden purchase EVER!
Bought 8-10 ft and all were barely 8 if you count the container. Trees are thin and lots of brown branches and broken branches due you thrown in box truck no wrapping or anything. Hoping they survive and thicken up quick…
