Viburnum dentatum
Choose Arrowwood if you want a tough native-style shrub for an informal hedge, wildlife planting, or property edge. Its strength is dense seasonal cover with flowers and berries; the tradeoff is that it needs room and won’t give evergreen winter privacy.
Buy This If
You want a natural deciduous hedge.
Birds are part of the plan.
You have room for a broad shrub.
Skip This If
You need evergreen winter privacy.
The site is tight or formal.
Soil stays very dry or soggy.
PGNE Report Card
Category
Grade
Why
Landscape Impact
B+
It gives spring bloom, berries when pollinated, and a natural shrub shape, but it is not a formal focal point.
Growth Rate
B
It fills in at a steady pace without becoming a constant pruning job.
Maintenance
B
It needs occasional thinning and cleanup, especially if you want to control size.
Deer Resistance
C
This isn't deer-resistant; deer may browse it, especially tender new growth, so protect it where deer pressure is heavy.
Small Space Fit
D
It wants elbow room and can overwhelm tight beds near walks, steps, or windows.
Screening Value
B+
It makes a dense seasonal screen, but it drops leaves and will not block winter views.
Our Experience
At PGNE, we’d typically use Arrowwood in a mixed border or loose hedge, not a tight front-bed lineup. Give it space, pair with another compatible viburnum when berries matter, and prune after flowering.
Usually better with another compatible viburnum nearby for pollination.
Is it good for privacy?
Yes for seasonal screening, not for winter privacy.
Can I keep it small?
Not easily; choose a smaller shrub if space is limited.

Shrubs Grown to Perform in New England
At Pro Growers of New England, our shrubs are grown and maintained locally to perform in true New England conditions. From flowering varieties to evergreen foundation plants, each shrub is properly spaced, pruned, and cared for to develop strong root systems and balanced structure before it ever reaches your landscape.
Unlike large online sellers that ship plants long distances, we invite you to visit our nursery, walk the rows, and inspect the exact shrubs available. You can see the size, health, and fullness in person — ensuring there are no surprises upon delivery.
We use your zone to recommend plants that survive your winters, and to estimate when your
order ships — we ship each plant when the weather where you live is right for it.

Bought 8-10 ft and all were barely 8 if you count the container. Trees are thin and lots of brown branches and broken branches due you thrown in box truck no wrapping or anything. Hoping they survive and thicken up quick…
I went up there today from Quincy MA to pick up two Blue Wichita Junipers and they were absolutely beautiful. Thank you, Chris and everybody from Pro Growers of New England!

The plants are beautiful and all 13 were consistent in height and width. And at a fraction of the cost of other garden centers. Having the team that delivered them do the planting was one of the best values I can think of. They did a great job from start to finish and even helped me with my watering system which they didn’t have to do!

Great prices and Unbelievable selection of big and small trees, shrubs, and flowering perennials! Nicest folks to work with. And local delivery is awesome! First time purchasing from this company, , and have already told friends, neighbors and family. The owner Chris is professional, knowledgeable, and yet laid back in a most friendly way. Mags in the office will help with any details. My all time BEST garden purchase EVER!
