Fall is the best time
to plant a tree.

75 varieties of shade and flowering trees in stock right now in Newton, New Hampshire.

From $55 · shade trees up to 12–14 ft

A deciduous tree planted in September and October goes into winter with its top growth already shut down and the ground still warm — so everything the tree has goes into roots instead of leaves. Plant the same tree in May and it has to push leaves and roots at once, then meet its first July with a root system that has had eight weeks to get established. That is the whole case for fall planting, and it is why the trade plants in fall.

Everything on this page is in a container or a fabric bag, so the root system travels with the tree rather than being cut off in the ground. That is what makes a fall planting window this wide possible at all.

Redmond Linden at $67 is the most tree per dollar on the lot right now — an 8–10 ft shade tree for the price of a large shrub. Twenty of them. For street-tree scale, the 12–14 ft Princeton Elm at $334.33 is the biggest thing here and there are 33 of those.

Reading the sizes. Shade trees are sold by trunk caliper, measured six inches off the ground, and the height range in brackets is what that caliper usually runs to. A 1.5–2" caliper tree is roughly 8–10 ft tall. Numbers like #15 or #20 are container sizes; AGFB means the tree is in an above-ground fabric bag. Anything 2" caliper and up needs equipment or several people to move — tell us at checkout if you want it delivered rather than picked up.

Questions we actually get asked

Is fall really a good time to plant trees in New England?

For deciduous trees it is the best time. Top growth has stopped, the soil holds warmth well into November, and the tree spends the whole window building roots instead of splitting its effort between roots and leaves. A tree planted now meets next July with nearly a year of root establishment behind it.

How late can I plant?

Until the ground freezes hard, which in southern New Hampshire is usually late November and sometimes into December. Mid-October is a comfortable target. If you are planting in the last week of the window, go with a container or fabric-bag tree — which is everything on this page.

What size tree should I buy?

Smaller trees establish faster and catch up to bigger ones within a few years; bigger trees give you the effect immediately and cost more to move. For a front yard where you want to see something now, 8–10 ft. For a screen or a woodland edge where you are planting several, the smaller grades go further.

What does caliper mean?

Trunk diameter measured six inches above the ground. It is how shade trees are graded in the trade, because height varies with species and caliper does not. Roughly: 1–1.5" is a 7–8 ft tree, 1.5–2" is 8–10 ft, 2–2.5" is 10–12 ft.

Do you plant the tree for me?

Yes — installation is $150 per tree within 50 miles of Newton. Add it when you order.

Can I get a tree home in a car?

The smaller ornamentals, yes. Anything 1.5" caliper and up is heavy and awkward — the root ball is the weight, not the top — and is better delivered.

Do you have native trees?

Yes. Red maple, sugar maple, river birch, pin oak, serviceberry, sweetbay magnolia, eastern hophornbeam, black gum, redbud and flowering dogwood are all native to the northeast, and they are all on this page or one click from it.

Where can I buy shade trees near me?

From our nursery in Newton, New Hampshire. We deliver up to 100 miles — most of New Hampshire, northeastern Massachusetts and southern Maine — and order pickup runs six days a week.
